Reading the Label FROM THE NOTEBOOK

A closer look at supplement labels

Serving size, ingredient quantities and warnings: practical things to check on a supplement label.

Two supplements can have similar names and very different labels. The words on the front of the pack are a starting point, not the whole story. If you are comparing products, most of the useful details are on the side or back.

Start with serving size

First find the amount the manufacturer calls one serving. It might be one capsule, two tablets or a measured scoop. Then read the ingredients per serving. If two products use different serving sizes, comparing their headline numbers can be misleading.

Keep the serving size in view while reading every quantity. A number on the front of a pack does not always describe a single capsule.

Read the complete ingredient list

Check each listed ingredient, its quantity where provided, and any other ingredients used in the formulation. Look for allergen information, too. If you see a named blend without a clear breakdown, that is a reasonable question to ask before deciding.

For botanical ingredients, the plant name, plant part and extract information may help explain what is actually being offered. Do not assume details that are missing.

Find the practical information

Look for pack size, directions, precautions, relevant storage instructions and manufacturer or importer details. On the physical packaging, batch information and expiry dates also matter.

A photograph of fruit or leaves may illustrate a wellness category, but it is not a photograph of the product label. Check the actual product information separately.

Do not fill the gaps with guesses

A listing with no price, stock confirmation or complete label is not ready for a purchase decision. Request the label or clarification instead. Supplify keeps some pages visible for browsing while the final details are being checked.

For personal suitability, medicine interactions, pregnancy or existing health conditions, speak with an appropriate qualified healthcare professional. A general online article cannot make that decision for you.

The best question is often the simplest one: “Where can I find that on the label?”

To remember: compare serving sizes, read ingredients and warnings together, and ask when an important detail is not there.

A note on product information

These journal articles are general information, not medical advice or a substitute for product-specific labeling. For questions about medicines or health conditions, speak with a qualified healthcare professional.

One useful thing to take away? Always check the information that matters to you.
